My knowledge of the Kavluic Surname is currently limited. My research
in this areas has not been as extensive as with other surnames that form the roots of my family tree. However,
this is soon to change and for I will be in a better position further my research.
In spite of the limited research, the Kavulic
surname is of Eastern European origins most likely originating from the Slavic word "kava" which in English means crow, the
bird. Its original spelled was most likely "Kavulič".
The English transliteration of the character "Č" is "ch", thus
making the English spelling "Kavulich". It appears that due to mis-interpretation
and pronunication the diacritic character "Č" became the letter "c", and the letter "h" just vanished.
"Kavlick" is another variation that is commonly found. In my research I have come across some evidence
where documents had an individual's surname spelled "Kavulic", however the family now spells their name "Kavlick".
This is a good example of the confusion in the spelling of surnames when our ancestors arrived in the United States.
