Notes for Jurkó ‘George’ Brenzovich:

  • NAME:  Jurkó’s mother’s surname was spelled Shanta on his social security account application.  Due to the phonetic sounding of certain Cyrillic letters of the Eastern Slavic language, it is believe that Shanta is the English spelling for Šanta.
  • BIRTH PLACE:  The village Vŷška, Carpatho-Rusyn spelling, [also spelled Viharos is Hungarian or Vyška is Ukrainian] is now located in present day Ukraine.  It is in the Velkyj Bereznyj district of the Transcarpathian Oblast (Region).  Prior to the partitioning of the Hungarian Empire after World War I, Vŷška was then part of  the Hungarian Empire and was located in the administrative county of Už [English translation is Uzh, spelled Ung in Hungarian].  Vyška is geographically located in southern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains of East-Central Europe, the ancestral homeland of the Carpatho-Rusyn people.  The region was known for centuries as Carpathian Rus'; also referred to as Ruthenia.  The area comprising Už County was called Subcarpathian Rus’.   After World War I it was made part of the republic of Czechoslovakia.  After World War II it was annexed by the Soviet Union and made part of the Ukraine.  For more information about the Carpatho-Rusyn people and their homeland, click here.
  • PLACE OF DEATH:  Jurkó moved to the Rest Haven Hospital in May 1967 and lived there approximately six months before his death.  Rest Haven is actually a senior citizen facility rather than a hospital.  At one time it was Schuylkill County’s almshouse (poor house).  Rest Haven located in Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania, a short distance from St Clair where Jurkó lived.
  • BROTHER:  A brother Frank living in Montreal Canada was mentioned as a surviving brother in Jurko's obituary.  However, no other information has been found to date to verify this

Spouse: Ánna Kočmarj [Katchmar] {see notes for Ánna}

Ánna was born around the early 1890’s in Vŷška, Už County, Subcarpathian Rus', Austria-Hungary.  She married Jurkó ‘George’ Brenzovich in Mar 1906 in Vŷška, Už County, Subcarpathian Rus’ Austria-Hungary and had a son.  Ánna died in 1964 in Vŷška, Transcarpathian Oblast, Ukraine; assume she is also buried there until proven otherwise.

More about Ánna Kočmarj:

Age at time of death: Approximately 74 years

Immigration:  Ánna did not immigrate to the United States with her husband.  According to Jurkó’s petition for naturalization Ánna remained in Vŷška.  Reason for not immigrating with her husband is not known at this time.

Notes for Ánna Kočmarj:

  • NAME:  Ánna's surname was spelled Katchmar on Jurkó’s naturalization documents. Due to the phonetic sounding of certain Cyrillic letters of the Eastern Slavic language, it is believe that Katchmar is the English spelling for Kočmarj.  However, Kochmar is more likely the correct English spelling.
  • MARRIAGE: Even though Ánna never immigrated to the United States, it is assumed that Jurkó and Ánna remained married.  There is no known evidence that either remarried at this time.
